About the location

Évêché de Metz - Ancienne abbaye Sainte-Glossinde
15 Place Sainte-Glossinde, 57000 Metz
  • Moselle
  • Grand Est
One of the most old(former) Christian buildings(ships) of the city of Metz. History(Story) begins in the VIIth century when saint Glossinde chooses to become moniale rather than to get married. A convent is then built: Sainte-Glossinde becomes the minster of the convent. He(It) shelters sisters up to Revolution, dates in which they are evicted(deported). They do not return any more, but the whole convent becomes then the seat(siege) of the bishop of Metz. Today, the church is the chapel of the bishop's palace. The current building(ship) was built between 1752 and 1756 on plans of the architects Barlet and Louis. The relics of saint Glossinde are kept(preserved) in the ossuary. Representations of the regional saints as merciful saint, saint Arnoul and saint Chrodegang, and one of the rare baldachins of Moselle are found there so also. The dome (today very damaged) is the work of the painter of Stanislas, Mr Girardet. The altar hidden in a cupboard dates Revolution him(it).
