Built in March 1870, the Guebwiller Synagogue bears witness to the neo-Byzantine architecture of the 19th century and the Jewish history of the town. Consisting of an inner nave, two aisles with grandstands and a wooden coffered ceiling, it faces south-east towards Jerusalem.
The Jewish community of Guebwiller is very old. It can be said to date from the thirteenth century. In 1333, a synagogue is mentioned. In 1349, the community was destroyed, accused of being at the origin of the plague. In 1784, the community was reconstituted and gathered about 40 people.
Replacing a 19th-century building that had become too small, the current synagogue was inaugurated in 1872\. During the Second World War, it was severely ransacked by the Nazis, but the furniture was saved from destruction by the local population.
In 1957, the synagogue received its first restoration and was protected as a Historic Monument in 1984\. Between 2000 and 2019, various maintenance works are carried out.
