The abbey was based(established) towards 589 by Irish monks led(driven) by saint Léobard, an adherent of Colomban of Luxeuil. In 724, following a fire, the monastery was restored by saint Maur, its fifth abbot, where from the current naming. Royal abbey, it was richly endowed by the Merovingian kings, but the second fire destroyed it again in 824\. It was rebuilt and confided(entrusted) in Drogon, brother of king Louis le Pieux and bishop of Metz and the minster was dedicated in 971 by Erchenbald, bishop of Strasbourg. It is of this last time(period) and of the XIth century that dates the splendid facade of the church. Very prosperous until the 12th century, it declines over the centuries following, marked by the war of the German Farmers of 1525 and the Thirty Years War of 1618\. The abbey finds prosperity up to Revolution, but its buildings(ships) devoted to monastic life are destroyed during this period. The minster dates of 12th - 13th s. and of the 18th s. Archaeological crypt VIITH - XVIIITH s. Organ Silbermann entirely restored in 2009-2010.
