About the location

Château
Parc du Château, 88000 Épinal

A first castle, which was part with Fontenoy-le-Château and Remiremont, of the first fortresses of the southern Vosges, was built on the site around the year 1000\. It was rebuilt by the bishop of Metz, Jacques de Lorraine, around the middle of the 13th century. Perched on a rocky ridge, it presents itself as a polygonal enclosure provided with a powerful residential keep and a large tank with filtering bodies. The remains of the seigneurial house, as well as other buildings (arsenal, captain’s house, oven, chapel, etc.) were discovered during the excavation of the castle during the 1980s. Enlarged and adapted to artillery by the dukes of Lorraine at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the castle was destroyed by the troops of Louis XIV in 1670\.
This medieval fortified complex has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1992.
