The motto of Rheims «God be kept» would translate a vow of Louis the Debonnarian, formulated during his coronation in 816\. The latter advocated the destruction of the fortifications in order to recover the stones, at the beginning of the Viking raids!
Four enclosures were built successively through time: around 50 BC, in the 4th and 14th centuries. Today, only this butte pierced by a poterne and surmounted by the «Tower of the Well» remains.
Wanted by Philippe Auguste, the fortification, completed in 1358, included the village of Saint-Rémi, its abbey and that of Saint-Nicaise.
