Recently reopened after four years of work, the convent of the Dominicans in Colmar is an exceptional heritage site, worthy of the rich collections it houses. The convent church, a Gothic masterpiece of the mendicant orders, still retains a religious function and hosts the famous painting by Martin Schongauer, The Virgin with the Rose Bush. The gallery of the cloister highlights one of the most beautiful ancient funds of Alsace. Since 1951, the municipal library has been housed in an 18th century building. Resulting from the grouping of monastic libraries in 1803, it has refocused since 2012 on its heritage missions. It preserves 1,217 manuscripts (one third of which are medieval), 2,300 incunabula – the second collection in France after Paris –, 50,000 books printed between the 16th and 18th centuries, and nearly 40,000 Alsatians.
