• The Meuse Valley •
The Meuse Valley is a Natura 2000 classified area: between the meanders of the Meuse and the Canal de l'Est.
The Natura 2000 perimeter covers 75 municipalities and extends from Brixey-aux-Chanoines in the south of the department to Vilosnes-Haraumont in the north of Verdun. The site of the Meuse Valley is a refuge of exceptional interest for birds, with the presence of thirty species of birds listed of European interest.
The richness of the Meuse Valley is based on the diversity of environments and the hydrological dynamics of the river. The site consists of the Meuse River and its annexes, flooded meadows, alluvial forests and dry limestone lawns on some hillsides.
Grasslands make up the majority of environments. They constitute vast territories of hunting and feeding for some birds (birds of prey, large wading birds, anatids...) and are suitable for nesting of the avifauna, especially the Rail of the broom. The main issues for birds are maintaining grass surfaces
