Abbaye de Vallières
2 rue de la Grange-des-Dîmes, Vallières, 37230 Fondettes
- Indre-et-Loire
- Centre-Val de Loire
Founded in 958 by the Abbey of Saint-Julien de Tours, the Abbey of Vallières is consecrated by a Bull of Pope Nicholas III in 1278\. At that time, it had essentially an agricultural and wine-growing vocation, thus contributing to the maintenance of the Abbey of Saint-Julien. It became the Abbots' «pleasure house» in 1515 thanks to Abbé Jean Binet, a great builder, who undertook important restoration work and created terraces to accommodate gardens of amenities. Sold as a national property during the revolution, it has been divided since the 19th century. Its current owners have recreated its winery and are working to restore its gardens.
