The Fort of Saint-Père was built between 1777 and 1785 to protect Saint-Malo from English attacks by the lands and complete the defense system imagined by the famous Vauban. Intended to house 600 soldiers and reserves of explosive powders, this bastioned fortification (in the shape of a star) has not yet known any battle and no siege.
Its history is however well linked to the great events. Part of its enclosure was destroyed in 1944 by the Germans, in their flight, to the Liberation. Since 1989, when the municipality purchased and began restoring the site, the Fort has become a venue for festivals, culture and recreation. No wonder about the story. Already on July 14, 1777, when the first stone was laid, an immense feast had gathered 5,000 people!
A visit organized by the association 1,2,3 Fort in partnership with the town hall of Saint-Père Marc en Poulet.
Free visits are also possible from 2.30pm to 6.30pm on Saturdays and from 10am to 6.30pm on Sundays. You can discover the insertion site "Les Ateliers du Fort" on Sunday.

An architecture deserving of Vauban: The Fort is built in Vauban in the shape of irregular quadrilateral with salient bastions in angles. 19 hectares of area between the inside and the outside(exterior) of the Fort and 1.7 km of external tour(ballot) and staves(moats). The powder keg is the undoubtedly biggest(undoubtedly greatest) of Europe with 342 m2 on the ground indoors, and 621 m2 outside. The arsenal of more modest proportions was planned(provided for) to store less dangerous materials.
