The remains of the castle of Guingamp, known as Peter II, allow an open reading of the construction-reconstruction of a castle on itself. Between 1034, date of the first feudal mound and 1626, date of the setting up of the last castle on the order of King Louis XIII, three typical fortresses of their time, succeeded each other on this site.
The materials resulting from the demolition of the castle were used for the construction of the convent of the Augustine Hospitallers (now the Town Hall). Today, this founding place of the city of Guingamp, long closed to the public, is finally open. The accessibility of the south curtain allows to appreciate a unique panorama.

The Château de Guingamp was the subject of an archaeological excavation in 2005\. This first complete excavation of a castle revealed structures often little known or even unprecedented. It provides first-rate data for the knowledge of the evolution of castral architecture in the West. One can thus discover: the Motte (XIth), the first transformations from XIIth to XIIIth century, the fortress of artillery (XVth).
