A pastiche in the Louis XIII style, this 1865 construction is a good example of late-century constructions. A decree of 1861 decided the construction of the prefecture on the site of the old barracks of gendarmerie. The plans had been submitted since 1860 by the departmental architect Aimé. In 1864, the pediments of the courtyard of honour and the south facade were executed by the sculptor Le Merle. The main staircase ramp was forged by Albert Lefebvre. In June 1940, the Germans settled there. On 22 July 1945, General De Gaulle held an audience in the Council Chamber. This room is refurbished and decorated by Bompard, a marine painter, for the visit of the King of Cambodia in 1948\. The building has a floor surmounted by an attic with sloping ceilings. Its central part, raised, is cushioned by a rounded pediment where are sculpted the imperial eagle and two armed characters (Nominoë and Alain Barbe-Torte, hero of the Breton independence). A bull’s-eye illuminates the dome that surmount
