Plants, animals, insects… form biodiversity. Biodiversity is found everywhere, even in cemeteries. A new way of managing cemeteries, with the development of vegetation and the cessation of the use of pesticides, allows the creation of a “natural cemetery”. In Kerfautras, the area dedicated to biodiversity is a real green space that is part of the green fabric of the city, essential to the ecological and landscaped balance. The city of Brest is committed to the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable development in all its development actions.

In addition to a lush green setting, you can see a large military square housing the remains of military and civilian victims of the First World War, who died in military hospitals in the region (many RAF airmen, British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealanders). You will also not miss the cenotaph erected in 1924 in memory of the soldiers and sailors of the Brest garrison and its columbarium.
