Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), physicist and chemist by training, was a pioneer in microbiology. He is the inventor of the pasteurization process and the rabies vaccine, but also the discoverer of staphylococcus and coal bacteria. His work on fermentations led him to apply the microbiological method first in industry and agriculture, then from 1877 to 1887 in medicine and surgery (infectious diseases, vaccinations, immunology). Louis Pasteur is a major scientific figure of the 19th century, having received numerous awards, was honorary perpetual secretary of the Académie des Sciences and member of the French Academy. He was born in Dole on 27 December 1822, in this house located on the banks of the Canal des Tanneurs. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Dole decided to buy this house with a view to creating a museum in his memory. An international subscription is then launched.
