The church of Sainte-Etienne de Châtel seems to have been built at the end of the 15th, early 16th century.

The origin of Chatel in the Jura dates back to the domination of the Gauls by the Romans and the first man’s work on this hill would have been a watchtower intended to watch the plain and protect the Roman roads. These roads were the main road of Agrippa which led from Lyon to Besançon and the Rhine (today N83) and the so-called '' road of the Salt' Orgelet - Saint-Amour by Cressia, Rosay , le Chanelet etc .
The ‘’ Castel ‘’ primitive Roman was converted into a Christian church by the envoys of Saint-Irénée, then Bishop of Lyon, and died around the year 202.
This church was probably the first Christian church in the whole region. A large fire was lit to announce the celebrations during the passage of a missionary and the surrounding populations climbed the hill to go to the church. One of the trails still exists with its slab steps.
The church of Chatel was already famous at the time of Saint-Désiré (death around the year 404) and one entered it by descending steps . One still sees the
