During the Second World War, many works of art were stolen from their owners and taken to Germany by the Nazis.
Some have disappeared, but most of them have been found and, as far as possible, returned to their owners. For some, their rightful owners or rights holders could not be identified.
These works were then entrusted to the custody of the national museums, including the Louvre Museum. From a legal point of view, these works do not belong to the State, which is only the provisional holder, awaiting their restitution to their rightful owners.
