The municipality, which wanted to pay tribute to the victims of the siege, retained the project of Auguste Bartholdi, a lion symbolizing the resistance and courage of the defenders.
The construction of the Lion began in 1875. The colossal animal figure was completed in 1880. Made of sandstone blocks cut, sculpted and joined with cement mortar, the Lion is 11 metres high and 22 metres long.
