Discovery of the Royal Prisons in Saint-Amour
Great history and small secrets of an 18th century prison!
Under Louis XIV, Franche-Comté was a province prone to smuggling. The Justice des Gabelles was created to fight against the illicit trade in salt, tobacco and fabrics.
Completed in 1741, this building has a double function: audience and prison.
After the Revolution, the institution served as a prison of passage for inmates going from Lons-le-Saunier to Bourg-en-Bresse on foot. The prison was disused in 1869. The authentic prisons have been restored, during your visit, you will discover the path of an inmate for smuggling and let yourself be trained from guard to dungeons… You will walk the corridors of the prisons, to seize, at the corner of a door or at the turn of a staircase, their true history.
