A few words about the theatre In 1769, Émiland Gauthey, a sub-engineer from the States of Burgundy, provided the city with the plans and drawings of this Italian-style theatre. Built in 1776 on land belonging to the Jesuit order and bought by the municipality, it is strongly inspired by the contemporary Opera of Versailles, directed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel. From this first building we have only the interior volumes and the facade, the interior decoration having been completely redesigned in 1886.

It is Emiland Gauthey under-engineer of the states of Burgundy, which in 1769 provides to the city the plans and the drawings of this Italian theatre. Built in 1776 on land that belonged to the Jesuit order and was bought by the municipality, it is strongly inspired by the contemporary Opéra de Versailles, directed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel. From this first building only the interior volumes and the facade have reached us, the interior decoration having been redesigned in 1886\. The taste for the antique is shown on the facade in the large stone pilasters decorated with Ionic capitals, with volutes, finely decorated. The sobriety of the whole attests the assagissement of sensitive forms at the end of the reign of Louis XV.
