The town of Auxonne owes its historical fame to Napoleon Bonaparte, who stayed there from 1788 to 1791.The future French emperor learned the craft of gunner. Bonaparte, 19, still a young second lieutenant of the FERE regiment, arrived one day in June 1788 at the Artillery School and stayed in one of the barracks in Auxonne. During his stay at Auxonne, Napoleon Bonaparte learned most of his military profession and forged the foundations of his intellectual training at the Royal Artillery School. This young Corsican asserted his strong personality: he was intelligent, curious and ambitious.
