About the location

Château des Sires de Faucigny
74130 Bonneville
  • Haute-Savoie
  • Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Located on a hill at the foot of the Môle, built in the thirteenth century around 1260 by Peter II, and his daughter Béatrice de Faucigny. It is the only surviving example of Savoyard military architecture from the Middle Ages in the Savoie region.
This large building oriented East-West corresponds to the regular plan known as «square savoyard»: a quadrilateral having at each corner a cylindrical tower. There are only two corner towers left, connected by an 18-metre curtain to the east. On the south wall one can observe a Gothic window with double pointed wall, probably corresponding to the ceremonial room of the castle. Successively residence seigneuriale then residence comtale, it becomes seat of châtellenie, following the fire of 1392 which destroyed the dwellings. From the sixteenth century, the castle was transformed into a prison, which spared it the ruin. He retained this post until 1934 and during the Second World War.
