The cathedral was built on an old urban block from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. In the 4th century, the first buildings of a Christian community were structured. In 381, a first bishop, Domninus of Grenoble, is mentioned during the council of Aquileia. From that time, the Notre-Dame churches and a first Saint-Hugues church were joined, showing the importance of the activity of the episcopal see. Nearly a century later, the entire cathedral group acquires its final space while the buildings continue to evolve. The Romanesque cathedral was the subject of a major reconstruction in the 13th century. This campaign of works that affects the entire Episcopal block is carried out in a context related to the rivalry between the counts of Albon and the archbishops. The construction of the Saint-Laurent church by the counts is contemporary with these works.
