In Voingt, near the church and in a renovated Auvergne barn, the Maison archéologique des Combrailles is an exhibition space that preserves and presents the territory’s rich archaeological heritage through an original and spacious scenography.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of "Des voies et des hommes", from the great Roman road Lyon-Saintes, created by Agrippa at the beginning of the 1st century AD, to the A 89 motorway, through the royal roads designed by Trudaine in the 18th century.
But from the Neolithic period, the first exchanges were witnessed by an exceptional set of flint daggers from the Grand-Pressigny discovered in the dolmen of Saint-Étienne-des-Champs.
A large place is given to the ancient road village known as «Beauclair», former station Fines on the way of Agrippa, today straddling the communes of Giat and Voingt. The windows bring together many objects that evoke the daily life of the inhabitants of this Gallo-Roman agglomeration through architecture, local crafts, trade, religion and funeral practices.
Finally, the Middle Ages is an invitation to visit the Motte Castrale de Giat and the collegiate church of Notre-Dame d'Herment.
This route of 5000 years of history is completed by several playful monuments related to the exhibition that allow to verify the knowledge acquired during the visit.
