Crémieu is the capital of Isle-crémieu, a country in the heart of the Dauphiné, 40 km from Lyon. The territory of Isle-Crémieu has a wide variety of landscapes combining woods, ponds, rivers in the plains and high cliffs. The architecture of limestone and slate roofs (roofs in Isle-Crémieu) remains a striking feature of the landscape. Crémieu distinguished itself from the twelfth century with the installation of a priory of Benedictines at the top of the cliffs of Saint-Hippolyte and a castle on the hill Saint-Laurent. The city developed between the two hills. Dauphinoise since 1282 and bordering the Savoy, it plays an important military role and enjoys important commercial privileges. It was at the centre of the grain trade and entered Savoy, France, Italy and Switzerland.
