The restored old centre of Montmélian is a fine example of Savoyard urban architecture. The city at the foot of the fort is enclosed in its ramparts of the Middle Ages. On either side of the central street, the houses have narrow facades pierced by alleys, which sink into a maze of inner courtyards and covered passages. Renaissance-style hotels have retained their mullioned windows, spiral staircases and Italian-style loggias. From the convent of the Dominicans founded in 1319, it remains the building of the guests and the church (pulpit classified MH). The faubourg de la Chaîne (former entrance to the city), keeps a picturesque character with its cobbled street and the fronts of the old shops. The 17th century Cuénot bridge (MH) on the Isère offers a beautiful view of the city.
