«OF FREE DRAWING» returns in force this time to the Monastier sur Gazeille. The 3rd edition dedicated to graphic expression will take place from 19 August to 25 September 2022 at St John’s Church in the Monastier sur Gazeille. The exhibition, presents a selection of six artists in this medieval place simply framed by a sober and bright architecture. The diversity of the mediums that make up contemporary drawing, the abundance of subjects that it can take hold of, invite to give the genre complete freedom and autonomy. Drawing is transgressive, it hijacks and stretches our world through infinite conceptual and formal variations. Now, using new technologies, it goes beyond the frames and boundaries of the paper surface to settle in, invading our space like a colorful palimpsest. The Church of Saint John of the Monastier is the southernmost of the two parish churches that the commune once had and the only secular religious building that has reached us. The history of this parish and of this building, located on the immediate outskirts of the important Benedictine abbey of Saint Chaffre, is closely intertwined with it. The term Saint John the Baptist gives him a primitive role of baptistery. Quickly becoming a parish church, its existence is attested since the ninth century, thanks to the charter of Pépin king of Aquitaine, establishing a fair there. Saint John’s Church is one of the few examples of buildings that have undergone extensive archaeological study, conservation, consolidation and restoration work. A place no longer used as a place of worship, the Church is nowadays a setting for beautiful exhibitions of contemporary works.
