Built in a carefully chosen site and surrounded by the river, «l'Egrenne», Lonlay Abbey had an undeniable spiritual and material influence in the region and as far as England.
The abbey experienced the misfortunes of time and history: fires, looting, removals from the Commendatory Abbots… There were only three monks left in the Revolution.
Today, the abbey church still remains a thousand-year-old witness to architectural evolution and combines:
- a Romanesque transfer with original 11th century capitals,
- a large Gothic choir with three floors,
- an ambulatory with radiant chapels.
- varied and abundant furniture (altarpieces and stalls, etc.)
