Discovery of the Mulberry district

Discovery of the South of the Quartier des Mûriers
18 and 19 September 2021Passed
Aurélien Prévot

The mulberry tree was established in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in the middle of the 19th century for the breeding of silkworms, in order to reduce imports of this precious fabric. The culture collapsed very quickly but resumed at the beginning of the 1860s... with the same failure. However, the urbanization of this district, which was stopped by Caffin in 1859, is slow and there are only twenty "country houses" before the war of 1870. The subdivision continued slowly and in 1921 there were still many woods and cultivated fields. It was not until the 1950s and 1960s that the fields and woodlands were gradually urbanized and plots were divided. Let us walk in a rectangle formed by the Marne to the South, the railway to the East, the avenue de Bonneuil to the West and the avenue Denfert-Rochereau to the North. The proposed itinerary allows to understand the history of the district by observing the architecture of its houses, from the "remarkable building" protected by the PLU, to the modest «economic house». The booklet also includes a track game for children.
Visit booklet available in the lobby of the Hôtel de Ville, at the stand of the Culture service of the city of Saint Maur on the Place d'Armes (Saturday and Sunday from 14h to 17h) or downloadable on saint maur.com
