«The train and the viaduct of Wimereux, between heritage and modernity»

exhibition, by the Wimille-Wimereux Historical Circle.

Free Admission
In Wimereux, with the partnership of the City, the Association of Friends of the Church has federated local associations for the enhancement of the Heritage (civil, religious, military) to invite you to look up at the viaduct and to look at the construction of the railway track in Wimille, with its station, which was the decisive element in the genesis of the seaside resort of Wimereux (currently classified Remarkable Heritage Site). An independent urbanization of Wimille has been created, with its city center, around its church (currently closed due to restoration)
Description of the theme of the exhibition proposed by the Wimille Wimereux Historical Circle:
In the 19th century, everywhere in France, railways revolutionized the means of transport. “They organize space and change distances and perceptions.” In Wimereux, the arrival of the train and the inauguration of the station in 1867 saw the emergence of the seaside resort and the city. A real work of art, «between heritage and modernity», the viaduct is inseparable and essential of the Wimereusian landscape.
The exhibition traces the arrival of the train in Wimereux and the inauguration of the station on January 7, 1867. It allows to follow the evolution of the city becoming a «finished and structured» place thanks to the viaduct and the church.
These various works will lead to the emancipation of the commune as well as the birth of the hotel industry. In both conflicts, the train and overpass will be major military objectives.
This exhibition of documents will be accompanied by an exhibition of objects related to the railway world, including models, with the collaboration of the Club des Ferrovipathe du Calaisis which will exhibit the model of the viaduct of Wimille-Wimereux and the station of Wimille-WimereuxWimereux, reproduction faithful to the HO scale.
NB: It is forbidden to photograph documents during the exhibition.
The Wimille-Wimereux Historical Circle was created on 4 November 2006 by history enthusiasts. Its purpose is to make known and relive the past of our two cities. He conducts numerous research and organizes numerous exhibitions and conferences.
The Club des Ferrovipathes du Calaisis was born in 1987: its goal: “to bring together model makers and all collections with a railway character...” for»Create and exhibit». The first construction of all ferrovipathe begins with the construction of modules. The objective of the association is to help each other to build its network from «A» to «Z» in compliance with the standards of the French Federation of Railway Model Making for models at different scales, while allowing the installation of decors (delicate step, the choice of decors to the taste of everyone with possibilities of advice to achieve them.), electricity and electronics… Contact: President: Abel SCHAPMAN, Tel. 06 99 68 24 12; Secretary: Jean LOGIER, Tel. 03 21 34 56 34, or by e-mail: courrier@les-ferrovipathes-du-calaisis.fr

An independent urbanization of Wimille was created, with its city center, around its CHURCH (currently closed due to restoration). In Wimereux, the viaduct opens the way! The viaduct, built between 1859 and 1863 by engineer Théophile Dobelle on the territory of Wimille, spans the course of the «Wimereux» which gives its name to the hamlet which became an independent town in 1899\. 1862: the decree ordering the extension of the railway line from Boulogne to Calais has just been published opening access to the coastline and to the beautiful era of sea baths.
