About the location

Église Saint-Pierre
22 Grand Rue, 57140 Norroy-le-Veneur
  • Moselle
  • Grand Est
The history of the church of Saint-Pierre is linked to the strategic position of the village in the Middle Ages, when it first belonged to the duchy of Bar, then, from the 15th century, to the duchies of Bar and Lorraine. It was indeed from Norroy that the dukes launched attacks against the rich city of Metz, then a free city of the Holy Roman Empire. In the fourteenth century, but especially in the fifteenth century, because of the successive wars between the dukes of Bar and Lorraine and the city of Metz, the church was enriched with defensive improvements.
The oldest part of the church is the crypt, a remarkable remnant of the early church. This crypt, dated to the 11th century (estimated date: 1050), was classified as a historical monument in 1930.
