The Kriegstor, an element of the urban enclosure dating from the Annexation period.

Following the 1870 war, Alsace and the Moselle were annexed to Germany. Very quickly, it was decided to fortify Strasbourg and its surroundings in anticipation of a new conflict.
We invite you to discover this unique example of modern German urban enclosure.

Although it is a well-known place of Strasbourg joggers, the fortifications of the urban enclosure built in the German era (Kernumwallung) between 1876 and 1882 are still largely unknown although recently enhanced.
The preserved part is located west of the Strasbourg station and includes bastions 14, 15 and 16\. This enclosure takes the form of a large mass of land inhabited by barracks and powder kegs. Its summit forms a parapet arranged as an artillery platform and embellished with numerous sleepers. This wall is preceded by a water ditch still preserved and a glaze now replaced by… a fast track. Between Bastions 14 and 15, the enclosure is pierced by Gate 2, now rehabilitated.
