Château Stanislas
Le château, 55200 Commercy
Of the fortress of the damsels of Commercy, there remain only elements of the outer enclosure, reused at the end of the seventeenth century as the bedrock of a princely residence.
The work was initiated by the Cardinal de Retz, last damsel, exiled on his lands of Commercy by Louis XIV. It is here that he wrote the «Memoirs» which made him famous. The prince of Vaudémont is the true creator of the castle of Commercy. Familiar to the Duke of Orleans, he called upon his architects, Germain Boffrand and Nicolas Dorbay, who gave him his current appearance and imagined his urban extension: Fer à Cheval and Stanislas Avenue. The king of Poland will add the two low wings, designed by Emmanuel Heré.
