Around 1090, a Lorrain, Charles Albert dit de Varangéville, brings back from Bari a relic of Saint Nicolas (his «blessing dextre» which justifies in 1101 the construction of a first church). After the victory of 1477, the reception of ever more numerous pilgrims led to the creation of a «great church», which is also the testimony of recognition of Duke René II.
Thus, in 1481, the construction of the Basilica began, which was consecrated in 1560\. From then on, the dukes and famous people of Lorraine, princes and kings of France followed one another to ask for the protection of Saint Nicolas.
The Basilica suffered significant damage during the 17th century as the city lost its commercial importance. It was gradually restored but the French Revolution and the bombings of 1940 completed the deterioration of the building.
