Bouxières-aux-Dames is a small town in the north east of France. The city is located in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle in region Lorraine. The town of Bouxières-aux-Dames belongs to the borough of Nancy and the canton of Malzéville. The inhabitants of Bouxières-aux-Dames are called Bouxièrois and Bouxièroises.
The second part of the name of the commune comes from its abbey of canons or «ladies», founded by Saint Gauzelin in the tenth century. In the 15th century the abbey was transformed into a chapter of canons, one of the four noble chapters of Lorraine. The abbey persisted until 1787 when the canons who were bored at Bouxières-aux-Dames wanted to benefit from the advantages of city life and settled in Nancy near Bonsecours. The abbey was destroyed after the Revolution and the stones were reused for the construction of several houses.
In 1793, the commune took the revolutionary name of Bouxières-au-Mont. It was renamed after the French Revolution.
