The Palace of Jena and the poet of concrete

Auguste Perret is the architect of the Palais d'Iéna which now houses the Conseil économique, social et environnemental. Let yourself be guided by a Lecturer of the Ecole du Louvre to discover the splendid hypostyle hall summer its 18 truncated columns, the magnificent hemicycle or its monumental staircase.
The poet of concrete Auguste Perret defines at the Palace of Jena (1939) a classical order whose proportions derive directly from the logic of the material. The tall columns carry the roof, under which a second building slides. They widen towards the top to escape into capitals. An implacable machine, capturing shadow and light on its pink marble and green porphyry concretes, the Palace of Jena is one of the most remarkable contributions of modern rationalism to universal architecture.

Although only a part of Perret’s plans was carried out (the rotunda on Place d'Iéna and the wing along Avenue d'Iéna, both embellished on the outside with fluted columns), the construction of the section bordering Avenue du Président Wilson was done by Paul Vimond, student of Auguste Perret, who tried to be faithful to the approach of his teacher. The Palais d'Iéna was completed by a third wing, different from the Perret style, designed by the architect Gilles Bouchez. The building houses murals by Souverbie as well as many elements of the original fur
