Ville de Fréjus
Designed to host combat shows of men and animals, the amphitheatre is a major building of the Roman city, erected at the beginning of the 2nd s. apr. J.-C. Around the central arena, bleachers embracing an elliptical plane allowed all the inhabitants of Forum Iulii to take their places. Its extramural location near the Gallic gate makes it a symbol of the power of the colony. However, the remains still visible today are the result of several centuries of reuse of materials used to build the medieval and modern city. The amphitheatre of Fréjus, was the subject between 2008 and 2012 of a project of conservation and valorization as part of the Plan Patrimoine Antique.
