Kartyé Lib Mémoire & Patrimoine océan Indien

Kartyé lib MPOI aims to promote initiatives for the preservation, development of sites, historical and archaeological monuments. It encourages the transmission by all media of memories related to tangible and intangible heritage, which is addressed to future generations and all public.
its 2020 work axes in connection with the preservation of the place of memory, St-Denis prison: Making visible the history and geography of the Indian Ocean (organization of conferences, exhibition, study days, etc.)

  • Circumventing the blockages on the history of the Indian Ocean;
  • Promote research on the themes of slavery, engagement, colonization, post-colonization, etc.;
  • Work to integrate the history and geography of Reunion and the Indian Ocean into textbooks.
    Our project during the JEPs, in connection with the platform CAPELINE974 (Centre d'Accompagnement Pédagogique en Ligne et d'Innovation Educative) which received two national awards in 2018 (history/geography/citizenship):
  • 1st prize:* winner of the national competition organized by the SPD (Interdepartmental Directorate for Public Transformation, March 2018)
  • 2nd prize:* winner of the national competition of the Assises des Outre-mer 2018 organized by the Ministry of Overseas Territories - September 2018.
  • Our actions for Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2020:*
  • Present the actions of Kartyé Lib MPOI in order to inscribe the Juliette Dodu prison in the architectural heritage of Saint-Denis, then eventually, in the perspective of its inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage;
  • Present a video: evolution of the Saint-Denis prison in Dionysian urbanism; - Present the model and a drawing of the buildings of the Prison Juliette Dodu;
  • Describe a testimony of a judicial proceeding of an 18th century slave (press article);
  • Making a booklet available: history of the Juliette Dodu prison, texts and documents...

The chapel was built in the 19th century under the impetus of the first bishop of Reunion, Bishop Desprez (1851-1871), who allowed the foundation of the mission of Saint-Thomas-des-Indiens in 1852 through the work of the Propagation of the Faith. IMH 22.10.1998
