Place des Charrons, in the Outre-Seille district, this prestigious building marks the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The hotel at no. 4 was built in the early 16th century for Michel de Gournay, master alderman of Metz and adviser to Duke Antoine de Lorraine. Shortly thereafter, a second building block was added to the east, currently No. 6\. While No. 4 is still marked by the late Gothic, No. 6 bears the mark of an evolution towards the Renaissance by its large windows and decorations made of human and fantastic figures.
The hotel will retain a great role over the centuries.
Indeed, during the important siege of 1552, when Metz succeeded in defeating the imperial troops of Charles V, it was this hotel that was the headquarters of the defender of the city, the Duke of Guise.
