The church was built in all likelihood around the middle of the 8th century. First dedicated to Saint Maurice, it will be later to Saint Aurélie. Located west of Strasbourg, it was erected on a tumulus (location of an old cemetery) and stood next to an ancient Roman road: the current Faubourg National.
