The Cheverny wash-house was built around 1875, following the major cholera epidemics (1830 / 1850), and the 1851 law requiring the municipalities to create a wash-house to improve domestic hygiene. On the north bank of the Courpin stream, two springs gushing from under the limestone plate were channelled to feed the wash-house, one, known as the Pont aux Bacles, along the way, and the other 50 meters in the field to the west. We found the detailed specifications for this construction. It has this peculiarity, unique in the region, to have five independent basins, perhaps to avoid quarrels between washerwomen. The elders remember that a man who kept the key was in charge of allocating the places for the day, against five pennies of the time.
