Musée Mérieux

The Dr Mérieux Museum of Biological Sciences is dedicated to biology and the fight against infectious diseases. It tells how women and men have learned to know the microbes, and to fight against the diseases that these microorganisms can cause, through diagnosis, vaccination and therapies.
This museum tells the story of the Mérieux, a family of pioneering scientists focused on global public health, whose history began in Lyon in 1897, then continued at Marcy l'Etoile in 1917, a small village in the West of Lyon that has become a major centre in the fight against infectious diseases.
Anchored in today’s world and looking to the future, the museum presents the major global health issues. It wants to raise awareness among all audiences, especially young people, so that they become actors of their health, by better understanding microbes and thus better fight against infectious diseases.

20th-21st century Influenza, AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria… Infectious diseases are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Dedicated to biology, the Musée de sciences biologiques, Doctor Mérieux, invites you to understand infectious diseases, their diagnosis and treatment as the principle of vaccination discovered in XVIII° by Jenner, developed in XIX° by Pasteur, until the industrial adventure of the Mérieux family. A place of memory resolutely focused on the future, this museum presents the major global public health issues and the new biotechnological and genetic weapons against infectious diseases. Located in the «Maison Carmino», owned by the former launderer of the Institut Mérieux, the museum is the culmination of a project born in 2001 at the initiative of Joël Piegay, mayor of Marcy l'Etoile and Alain Mérieux.
