The great quarry of Raon l'Étape exploits the «trapp», a formation representative of the limestone-alkaline volcanism of Devonian to lower carboniferous age of the northern Vosges. Thanks to its exceptional mechanical properties, the rock, crushed on site, is used as ballast or in bituminous asphalt.
