Chapelle Saint-Wendelin

Located at the western exit of Ammerschwihr, a few steps from the High Gate (14th century), the Saint-Wendelin chapel is ancient, since already mentioned in the archives in 1752\. During the turmoil of the French Revolution, it will host on Easter Monday 1793, the Pietà of the pilgrimage of the Three Epis (located 7km in the mountain) to put it in safety, before transferring it to the parish church of Saint-Martin. In 1804, the Pietà returned to its usual place of devotion.
Rebuilt around 1878-1880, the chapel suffered damage during the bombings of 1944 which destroyed the city by 85%. Repaired after the war, maintenance work was undertaken by the City in 1988 and continued about ten years later.
In December 1996, at the initiative of the inhabitants, an association was created to restore the interior of the building. After many years of efforts, the interior restoration is completed and the association of the Friends of the Saint-Wendelin and Saint-Eloi chapels, after the restoration
