About the location

Monument aux enfants de Verdun morts pour la France
Place de la nation, 55100 Verdun
  • Meuse
  • Grand Est
Built in 1928, the Monument to the Dead and Children of Verdun is based on the half-moon of the Chaussée, whose construction was ordered by the Marshal of Vauban in the 17th century. It rises in place of the military butchery destroyed in 1916\. This war memorial represents the five corps of the French army engaged in the battle of 1916\. From left to right, we see: a horseman, an engineer sapper, an infantry soldier, also called «Poilu», an artilleryman and a soldier of the Territorial. These five soldiers form a wall symbolizing the motto of Verdun: «On ne passe pas». At the foot of the monument are inscribed the names of the soldiers who died during the First and Second World War.
