Eglise Santa-Maria-del-Mercadal
66300 Castelnou
- Pyrénées-Orientales
- Occitanie
This church should be built at the beginning of the XIIth century when the population, become too important, could not meet any more in the castrale chapel. It is located except the surrounding wall(speaker) strengthened by the village and owes its name to the market which was held nearby. At that time, Castelnou was a very busy market: compulsory crossroads between Vallespir, Conflent and Roussillon. It is a Romance church with unique(only) nave with vault in Gothic arch(broken bow) and semicircular apse. The bell tower was topped up in French Revolution, as for the door of the church it was realised under the initiative of Guillaume V. It is made with some iron forged by Canigou, its speciality is that he(it) does not rust. It is also possible to see in every end of door of the mouths of chimeras put there to push away(repel) the evil spell.
