Guided tour
On the route jacquaire between Conches and Toulouse, a hospital of saint Jacques is built in Villefranche-de-Rouergue from the XIVth century. A chapel is built by the consuls of the city in 1455.
The chapel was built in 1455 to welcome the pilgrims who went(surrendered) to Santiago de Compostela since Rocamadour or Conches (road of the Volcanic hill). The chapel, administered by the brotherhood of Happy Saint Jacques, allowed them to pray and to rest(base) after a hard and dangerous journey. A hospital mentioned from 1330, and transformed into Hotel of Charity in the XVIIIth century, flanked(threw) the chapel initially.
The most modest pilgrims found refuge there and could get treatment. Others stayed in the inns of the city, before pursuing their long road towards Najac, Moissac and Toulouse.
It is a beautiful example of southern Gothic architecture with unique(only) nave and with the evocative decorations(sets).
