In the departmental limit of the Aude and of the Pyrénées-Orientales, Puilaurens has lived(remained) for a long time the most southern fortified castle of the kingdom of France. Archetypal bastion, perched on a rocky spur about 700 metres, they reach it in only 15 minutes walk. Up to the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), the castle undergoes Spanish incursions repeatedly. Badly defended(forbidden) and not much maintained from the end of the XVIIth century, it is definitely abandoned(definitely given up) in Revolution.
