The castle of Coussay was built on a platform surrounded with staves(moats), by 1520, by Denis Briçonnet, prior of Coussay. This one stayed several years in Rome as ambassador extraordinary de François 1st. The castle carries the imprint of the Italian Renaissance which it had discovered in Rome and this building underwent only not enough modifications since. In 1523, François 1st attributes(awards) it to the family Duplessis and this is the way(that's how) Richelieu inherits in 1608 from " his dear priory " where he will often stay until 1623.
