Chapelle Sainte-Catherine
Rue Sainte-Catherine, 57470 Hombourg-Haut
The building was built between 1250 and 1270 by the knight Simon de Hombourg, next to its house, as funeral domestic chapel for private use. It is then located in the perimetre(scope) of Ritterburg, strengthened gap from the medieval castle established by Jacques de Lorraine, bishop of Metz. Around the chapel, the buildings(ships) of Ritterbourg or Castle of the knights, with its tours(ballots) and its rampart, established(constituted) the extreme part(party) of the big(great) medieval castle. Its base served as funeral vault.
From the XVth century, the chapel Saint Catherine had become the centre of the worship(cult) of Fourteen Auxiliaries(Aids,Assistants) giving birth(rise) to a pilgrimage adorned with fourteen colossal statues which were established along the street Saint-Catherine who leads Saint-Etienne of collegiate to the chapel.
Several times restored in the course of its history(story), in 1706, on 1897 and 1986, the chapel is renowned for its decoration. It was listed(classified) in conformance with(for) historic monuments in 1895 under German authority, then again in 1930.
