About the location

Eglise Saint-Christophe
rue de la Comédie, 88300 Neufchâteau
  • Vosges
  • Grand Est
The primitive(initial) church of Saint Christophe has existed already in the middle of the XIth century, its plan is perfectly orientated eastward. Rebuilt at the beginning of the XIIth century, then once again at the beginning of the XIIIth century, the church kept(guarded) a rather homogeneous speed(look): a hall covered on the West, a nave of 4 spans with shoulders, covered with crossings of barlongues ogives, no transept, and a chorus(choir) of two spans with a polygonal apse, flanked(thrown) by two chapels with flat bedhead. The church Saint Christophe seems of Burgundian influence, as certify him the row(rank) of modillons crowning external elevation, and especially exceptional gallery in 3 columns of the eastern side.
In the XVIth century, a chapel was added to the South of the hall. At the beginning of the XVIth century (1505), Pierre Wiriot makes build his funeral chapel in the South. The chapel Wiriot, with its keys of hanging vaults is the real treasure of the church Saint Christophe. In 1617, the sacristy, " Revestiaire ", is built in the extension of the north shoulder. In the XVIIIth century are put the panels of cover of the chorus(choir) in sculpted, painted and golden oak and the pulpit. The church keeps(preserves) the most old(former) organ of Lorraine listed(classified) in conformance with(for) historic monuments. At the beginning of the XIXth century, the small cemetery surrounding the bedhead (and the entrance(entry) of which remains(subsists) street of the Comedy) is abandoned(given up). In 1867, the arrow of the bell tower is unfortunately destroyed.
