This monument is compound(made up) of a hexagonal donjon, an entrance(entry) with annexed curtain and bastions. In the donjon, built between 1602 and 1608, on the plans of the military engineer Raymond de Bonnefons, were added a few years later, a big(great) bastionnée surrounding wall(speaker) and a system of staves(moats) and of counterscarps. The most important element of defence between Antibes and Toulon, the Citadel is one of the only monuments of this scale on the Provençal coast(rib).
